It was first cultivated in Egypt and the Middle East, but was brought to Europe for its medicinal value. In India anise is used as a mouth freshener and digestive agent for a long time. In some Indian restaurants you can try the anise mix after your dinner. Anise is used in licorice and in Asian cuisines. But also the medicinal properties of this herb were known long ago in for instance Egypt, Greece and Rome and are still recognized today.
Aniseed oil has many properties such as antiseptic, digestive and sedative. Aniseed oil has relaxing and tranquilizing effects, but it also works as an expectorant; it loosens mucus or phlegm deposited in the lungs and respiratory tracts. This helps to relieve coughs, heaviness in the chest, breathing troubles, asthma, bronchitis, congestion and other respiratory disorders.
You can find many home remedies with anise on the internet, but use with caution in pregnancy and don’t use in high amounts.
